Our mission
We combat social isolation in older adults and positively influence youth’s perception of volunteering.
We combat social isolation in older adults by providing youth-led painting workshops, promoting holistic well-being in older adults and intergenerational connection.
We also encourage committed and fulfilling volunteerism by translating hobbies into social impact, reframing youth’s perception of volunteering as fun and engaging.
EmpowART
em.pow.art | im.pau.art
We chose the name EmpowART (pronounced like the word empowered) because of the dual nature of what we hope to accomplish with visual art as the keystone of our methodology.
Empowering older adults & youth through art
Guided painting workshops will be led by a team of university students in a step-by-step manner so patients who may be concerned about their artistic abilities do not feel overwhelmed as each brushstroke and shape is broken down into small manageable steps. Volunteers will also provide one-on-one assistance throughout the workshop as needed. Each art workshop runs for approximately one hour plus clean-up and set-up time.
We hope to empower older adults by challenging ageism and experientially demonstrating that anyone is capable of learning new skills like painting. We also hope to empower patients that they have the strength and emotional resilience to recover by taking advantage of the healing properties of art.
We to hope to empower youth to confidently take control of their volunteering experience. We hope the emphasis on integrating hobby-based activities to create social impact fosters youth to be engaged, lifelong changemakers.
Taken together, this promotes healthy aging, fosters intergenerational connections, and cultivates youth leadership and self-esteem.
